Death chests
Die to the world — a mob, lava, a fall, the void — and your items go in a chest only you can open. You have five minutes. PvP is different: if another player kills you, loot still drops on the ground.
How to get it back
- Respawn. Chat tells you the coordinates. Java players also see a timer floating above the chest; Bedrock does not, but the compass still works.
- You get a Death Compass. It points at the chest until the timer runs out. You cannot drop it or stash it in another inventory.
- Open the chest. Your XP comes back the first time you open it. Take what you need; when it is empty, the chest goes.
The five-minute timer
When time is up, leftover items drop on the ground as normal (they then despawn like vanilla drops). One death chest at a time: if you die again with loot still in the old one, those leftovers dump at the old spot and a new chest is placed at the new death.
Empty pockets do not make a chest. Dying empty on the way back will not replace a chest that is still there.
Who can open it
Only you. That includes a chest that landed in someone else’s claim — they cannot take it, and you still can. Explosions, pistons, hoppers and breaking the block do not work. Open it; do not try to mine it.
Unsafe deaths
If you die in lava, fire, magma, cactus or the void, the chest is placed on the nearest safe block within eight blocks. Chat says so if it had to move.
The chest is a single block with a double-chest inventory, so a trap cannot eat half of a vanilla double chest.
